This vast area was part of the original fish pond created for the Bishop’s of Winchester before it was cut in two by the building of the Winchester Road in the 1960s.

While water remains all year in the South Pond because of its clay bottom, the North Pond dries out during the summer revealing a verdant wilderness for birds, butterflies and other wildlife. This can be seen from the wooden walkway that crosses from the Corhampton Road (B3035) to St Bonnet’s drive and Lower Lane car park (see map).
